State Rep. Jaime Greene is spearheading a plan to establish a unique apprenticeship program tailored specifically for Michigan Army National Guard and Air National Guard service members.
Under Greene’s proposal, the training and experience gained during service in the Michigan Army National Guard and Air National Guard would count toward certain apprenticeship certifications. These certifications, approved by the Department of Labor and eligible under the G.I. Bill, will provide service members with opportunities for career advancement in high-demand fields.
Greene, a U.S. Navy veteran, said the plan reflects her commitment to supporting Michigan’s service members and their families.
“We are immensely proud of our Guardsmen here in Michigan,” said Greene, R-Richmond. “This program offers them a valuable opportunity for career advancement. It’s one way to show our support for those who serve and protect our communities.”
Greene’s plan, House Bill 5703, ensures the program will be cost-free for service members, allowing them to pursue professional development without financial burden. On-the-job learning will be integrated into duty hours under the direction of the service member’s supervisor.
“By bridging National Guard experience with civilian credentials, we can set our service members up for success while also addressing critical workforce needs in our state,” Greene said.
House Bill 5703 was referred to the House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee for consideration.
