Rep. St. Germaine urges support to combat M. Wollei –(MUCK) threat in Lake St. Clair
RELEASE|July 31, 2025

State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine (R-Harrison Township) today testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) in support of a proposed grant of $800,000 that would help combat an alarming invasion of Microseira wollei, which is commonly known as “muck” in Lake St. Clair.

The funding would support a partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Macomb County Public Works Office to complete a three-year field trial focused on removing and managing the benthic algae, which forms thick mats along the lakebed and poses a serious threat to Michigan’s ecology, economy, and recreational resources.

“Lake St. Clair is one of Michigan’s crown jewels,” said St. Germaine. “This investment would support targeted removal, treatment, and long-term study of an invasive benthic algae that’s damaging fish habitat, obstructing boating access, and jeopardizing the health of a lake enjoyed by out of state tourists and communities across the state. The muck also poses a safety threat. If someone falls in it, it acts like quicksand, and you would be a goner.”

The spread of the algae also has tangible economic consequences. With over 50 marinas and thousands of boat slips, Macomb County’s lake-based economy supports tourism, small businesses, and lakefront property values. Boaters are already encountering issues at launch sites due to thick algae buildup, and the continued spread threatens to limit recreational access and hurt local economies.

“This issue affects all of Michigan,” said St. Germaine. “Lake St. Clair is enjoyed by the state and an asset shared by all our residents. An investment today would help protect what makes Michigan a destination for outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.”
